About Dr. Wates
Rebecca J. Wates, PhD is a scientist in Early Development Services at PRA Health Sciences in Lenexa, KS. In this capacity she develops laboratory tests to support clinical trials across a multiple of disease types including heart disease, sickle cell anemia and cancer. In addition, Dr. Wates wears many hats including as a part-time research coordinator, adjunct faculty in Biology, and fierce advocate for STEM training and education for underrepresented minorities.

Dr. Wates is very active in the community where she grew up, Kansas City, MO; sharing her educational and career experiences with students enrolled in public schools through Prep-KC, serving as former Board Vice Chair of Urban Rangers of Kansas City focused on career preparation for young men growing up in the KC urban core, and forming STEMMsational Women as an advocacy group for Black women in STEMM.

Dr. Wates holds a B.S. in Biology from an HBCU, Dillard University (New Orleans, LA), a Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the University of Missouri (Columbia, MO), and completed her postdoctoral training at University of Kansas. She is an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.


Eligibility to attend:

  • Students and postdoctoral researchers in any discipline, interested in careers in the biological sciences.
  • Students from member institutions have designated spots on a first come first serve basis. 
  • Students from non-member institutions may register as space permits.
